You need a valid birth certificate proving the parent - child relationship. Case-specific scenarios include: genetic mother, genetic father, genetic father if the child were born out of wedlock and were legitimated by the father before the child’s 18th birthday, step-parent (step-mother or step-father) and adoptive parent (adoptive mother or adoptive father, provided that the adoption took place before the child’s 16th birthday).

If the U.S. citizen were born out of wedlock and were not legitimated by their genetic father before the child’s 18th birthday, they can still sponsor their father. Additional evidence is required that an emotional or financial bond existed between the two parties before the child was married or reached the age of 21, whichever came first.
