USCIS Temporarily Extended Validity Period of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record

The Covid-19 pandemic caused application processing delays, which is why the USCIS decided to temporarily extend the validity period for medical examination, officially known as the Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, Form I-693. Previously, the examination results were valid for two years, but now the validity period will last for four years, effective August 12.

If you intend to apply for a U.S. visa, you’ll need to take a medical examination to prove that you can be admitted to the U.S. To do so, you need Form I-693 signed by the USCIS civil surgeon and submitted together with your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. The signature cannot be older than 60 days before you filed Form I-485. To save time, it is best to file both forms simultaneously.

Medical Examination: Inadmissibility

As we know, taking a medical exam is an essential part of the U.S. immigration process. All applicants have to take the examination, without an exception. When it comes to the health-related grounds of inadmissibility to the U.S., the following applies:

  • Having a communicable disease of public health significance (Tuberculosis, Lymphogranuloma Venereum, Syphilis, Chancroid, Gonorrhea, Granuloma Inguinale, Hansen’s Disease);
  • Failure to show proof of required vaccinations;
  • Physical or mental disorder and harmful behavior;
  • A history of drug abuse or addiction.
