U.S. Visa: Biometrics Appointment

If you’re applying for a U.S. visa, attending a biometrics appointment is one of the requirements. In this way, the USCIS wants to check if you are admissible into the United States. The CBP officers make sure that no one enters the United States illegally because national security is a priority to them.

What is a Biometrics Appointment?

A biometrics appointment confirms your identity and is mandatory in immigration procedures. Whether you’re applying for a green card or a work permit, this is a standard part of the process. Without biometrics information, your application will most likely not be processed.

The term “biometrics” refers to a person’s unique physical and other characteristics essential to confirm their identity. This background check includes a fingerprint scan, facial scan, and digital photographing.

What to Bring to Your Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your application, the USCIS will notify you about your appointment. There are a few important items you need to bring with you. First and foremost, bring a printed copy of your application and a valid passport. A photo ID, such as a driver’s license, is a must. Don’t forget your supporting documentation as well.

It’s a good idea that you arrive earlier. The fingerprint scanner will take images of all ten fingers, as well as your photo. You must show your full face, not wearing any accessories that would cover your face. The only exception to this is head coverings worn for religious reasons.

Note that only children under 14 and adults over the age of 79 don't need to provide fingerprints.

Finally, there is no need to be worried about your biometrics appointment. As long as you follow the rules and don’t have a criminal record, you will be fine. After the appointment, you will receive a stamp on your appointment notice. Make sure to keep this document safe since you will need it later on.
